Harbour Light

Cityscape · Sunsets  ·  Stenpiren, Gothenburg  ·  Oct 30, 2026

Golden Hour by Stenpiren

The golden hour has arrived in Gothenburg. I am standing down by Stenpiren, the old stone pier, as the sun sinks behind the harbour and the whole sky slowly turns from blue to burning orange. The air is still, the ferries have gone quiet for a moment, and the river lies wide and calm in front of me.

Along the horizon the city turns into silhouettes. To the left the Seamen’s Tower rises with its lonely figure looking out to sea, behind it the long line of the Älvsborg Bridge, and in the middle the old Eriksberg crane stands like a monument to the shipyard days. The lights begin to come on in the windows, small golden dots against the darkening shore.

I set up the tripod on the stones and let the shutter stay open. The waves of Göta älv soften into silk, and the water catches every colour from above – orange, pink, violet and deep blue, all blending into each other. Next to me the pier marker with its big number eight glows in the last light, as if it wanted to be part of the picture too.

These are the minutes I love the most. Just before the sun disappears, when the light is at its warmest and the harbour seems to glow from within. A few minutes later it is gone, the blue hour takes over, and Gothenburg puts on its evening lights. But for a short while, the whole harbour was golden.
