Sunset at the APM Terminal

Cityscape · Sunsets  ·  Nya Varvet, Gothenburg  ·  Nov 6, 2026

Evening at the Port of Gothenburg

I am standing down by Nya Varvet as the sun sets over the harbour. The light has those magical tones that only come for a few minutes on a clear evening – violet up high, soft pink along the horizon, and a deep blue settling over the water.

Across the river mouth lies the APM Terminal, and there, beneath the massive blue-green cranes, is Laura Maersk. The cranes stand like giants with their arms stretched out over the ship, lit by hundreds of small lights, lifting container after container from the deck. Spreaders go up and down, trucks drive along the quay, and the whole port is in full activity while the sun slowly sinks below the horizon.

I set up the tripod and let the shutter stay open. The water is calm enough to turn into a mirror, and every light from the terminal stretches out in long, shimmering lines towards me. The floodlights become small stars, and the ship and the cranes are painted twice – once against the sky and once in the sea.

There is something special about a harbour at dusk. While the rest of the city is winding down for the evening, this is a place that never stops – the work goes on through the night, and the goods in those containers are already on their way somewhere. For a moment, though, it all stands still in one frame.
