Christmas Lights over Gothenburg

Night · Cityscape  ·  Kallebäck, Gothenburg  ·  Nov 5, 2026

Gothenburg was founded in 1621 by Gustav II Adolf – a trading town at the mouth of the Göta River, built with Dutch know-how about canals and fortifications. The East India Company, the shipyards and the harbour made it Sweden’s gateway to the world. The shipyards are long gone, but the city still looks out towards the sea.

This evening I’m up on the hill at Kallebäck with the camera on the tripod, looking out over the city. I wait for the traffic and leave the shutter open for several seconds. The cars turn into ribbons of white and red winding their way towards the centre, and far away the Liseberg Christmas tree glows like a golden cone above the rooftops.

This is one of my favourite spots in Gothenburg. From here I get it all in one frame – the office towers, the motorway in a long exposure and the first lights of Christmas. A few more exposures, then I pack up. Quiet, cold and just as beautiful as I had hoped.
