Rice Farmer -Thailand

Field crabs are small freshwater crabs that rice farmers often catch in the rice fields, especially during the rainy season when they are plentiful. These crabs are an important part of rural life in many parts of Thailand. Farmers bring them home to cook in traditional dishes, such as som tam (green papaya salad with fermented crab), or to use as a source of protein in everyday meals. Some farmers also sell them at local markets to earn extra income.

The crabs are kept in small mesh or plastic bags so they can be carried easily and won’t escape. It’s a common sight to see farmers returning from the fields with these little bags filled with lively crabs. For many, it’s not just food—it’s also a connection to local traditions and seasonal harvesting that has been part of Thai rural culture for generations.
