Wines

Wines

Wine has always had a natural place at my table, and for many years Italian wines were the clear favorites. There’s something special about the tradition, craftsmanship, and character they carry. But over time, I’ve started discovering great wines from other parts of the world as well — from South Africa and Ecuador to Australia. It opened up a whole new side of wine for me and showed that there’s much more out there to enjoy than I first believed.

Every bottle tells its own story. Different climates, soils, and winemaking traditions passed down through generations all leave their mark. In the end, good wine doesn’t need to be complicated — it should simply be honest, well-made, and shared with good people around the table.

There’s also something appealing about a bottle that catches your eye before you even taste it. Sometimes the design, label, or shape alone is enough to spark curiosity and make you want to open it.

The bottles below are wines we have personally tested ourselves.

Argentina

Argentinian wines are known for their bold fruit, generous body, and clear sense of sunshine in the glass. The country’s high-altitude vineyards, especially around Mendoza, give grapes intense flavor while keeping a fresh edge. Malbec is the star—dark, smooth, and packed with plum, blackberry, and a touch of spice. You often find soft tannins, good balance, and a clean finish. In short: full-bodied wines with power, but still easy to enjoy.

AUSTRALIA

Australian wines are typically bold, ripe, and fruit-driven, shaped by a warm climate and a no-nonsense winemaking style. Regions like Barossa Valley are known for powerful reds, especially Shiraz—full-bodied with dark fruit, pepper, and often a touch of chocolate and oak. At the same time, there’s good variation across the country, with some areas producing fresher, more elegant styles. In short: generous flavors, clear character, and wines that deliver exactly what you expect—straightforward and reliable.

AUSTRIA

Austrian red wines are often overlooked, but they’re well made, balanced, and very food-friendly. The focus is on freshness rather than power—lighter body, fine tannins, and clear fruit. The key grape is Zweigelt, which gives soft, juicy wines with cherry, raspberry, and a touch of spice. You’ll also see Blaufränkisch—a bit more structured, with darker fruit, pepper, and a slight earthy edge.

Regions like Burgenland lead the way, thanks to a warmer climate that helps ripen the grapes properly. In short: not as heavy as many international reds, but clean, elegant, and built for the table—very much in the old-school European style.

CHILE

Chilean red wines are known for their balance, ripe fruit, and good value. Thanks to a stable climate—sunny days and cool nights—you often get clean, consistent wines with soft tannins and clear flavors. The standout grape is Carménère, Chile’s signature, offering dark berries, herbs, and a slight green pepper note. You’ll also find strong Cabernet Sauvignon with blackcurrant, spice, and a firm but smooth structure.

Regions like Maipo Valley are well known for quality reds, often with a classic style—ripe but not overdone. In short: reliable wines with good fruit, balance, and a straightforward character that delivers year after year.

FRANCE

French red wines are all about balance, structure, and origin rather than sheer power. The style depends heavily on region. In Bordeaux you get structured wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot—blackcurrant, plum, cedar, and firm tannins built for aging. In Burgundy it’s mostly Pinot Noir—lighter, more elegant, with red berries, earth, and high freshness.

Further south, regions like Rhône Valley offer fuller, spicier wines, often based on Syrah. In short: France sticks to tradition—wines with structure, balance, and a clear sense of place, often better at the table than on their own.

ITALY

Italian red wines are driven by food, structure, and tradition. They often have higher acidity, firm tannins, and a savory edge rather than heavy sweetness. In Tuscany you’ll find Sangiovese—bright cherry, herbs, and a dry, grippy finish that works perfectly with pasta and meat. In Piedmont, Nebbiolo gives more serious wines—rose, tar, red berries, and strong tannins built for aging.

Further north, Veneto produces richer styles like Amarone, with dried fruit, spice, and more weight. In short: structured, food-friendly wines with character, often better at the table than on their own—very much the old-school way.

It is dry, firmly structured, and somewhat rustic, yet balanced by an underlying elegance. Herbal tones and mature tannins give it a long, steady finish.

PORTUGAL

Portuguese red wines are often robust, rustic, and full of character. They lean more toward structure and depth than polish, with firm tannins and good acidity. The backbone comes from local grapes like Touriga Nacional—dark fruit, floral notes, and strong structure—often blended with others for complexity.

Regions like Douro Valley produce powerful, concentrated reds with blackberry, plum, spice, and a touch of earth. You’ll also find softer, more approachable styles from areas like Alentejo. In short: bold wines with tradition behind them—less about finesse, more about depth and honesty, and very good with hearty food.

SPAIN

Spanish red wines are classic, structured, and often shaped by oak aging. They balance ripe fruit with spice and a touch of leather or vanilla from the barrel. The key grape is Tempranillo—giving flavors of cherry, plum, tobacco, and dried herbs.

Regions like Rioja are known for traditional styles with clear oak influence, while Ribera del Duero offers more power and darker fruit. You’ll also find bolder, warmer wines from Priorat. In short: balanced wines with both fruit and aging character—made to work well with food, in a steady, old-school way.

URUGUAY

Uruguayan red wines are most known for their bold, rustic style with plenty of structure and dark fruit. The flagship grape is Tannat—deep color, firm tannins, and flavors of blackberry, plum, and sometimes cocoa or spice. It’s a grape that can feel tough in youth but softens nicely with time or oak aging.

Most production is centered around Canelones, where the Atlantic influence helps add a bit of freshness to balance the power. In short: strong, characterful reds with old-world grip but a bit of new-world fruit, made for hearty food and slow drinking.

Garzón, Uruguay – Character from the Atlantic Hills

This red from Bodega Garzón shows a nuanced and fruit-driven style with clear influence from oak. The aroma opens with ripe plum and dark cherry, followed by notes of blueberry, black pepper, cocoa, bay leaf, and a subtle hint of black olives. It’s a layered and expressive nose that reflects the warm Uruguayan sun and careful winemaking.

On the palate, the wine is generous and structured, with dark fruit at the core and a savoury edge that adds depth. The oak brings gentle spice and a rounded texture, while the fruit keeps the wine lively and balanced.

Best served at around **18°C**, it pairs beautifully with rich dishes of dark meat – grilled beef, lamb, or slow-cooked stews. A bold yet refined red that shows why Uruguay is becoming an exciting wine region to watch.
