Fiber at Every Meal

Nutrition  ·  Oct 30, 2026  ·  3 min read

After years of protein, fiber is the nutrient everyone is talking about. On social media the trend is called “fiber-maxxing”, but the idea behind it is old and sensible: most of us eat too little. You do not need powders or a new diet to change that. The simplest way is to add a little to every meal.

How much do you need?

The Nordic Nutrition Recommendations advise adults to eat at least 3 grams of fiber per megajoule of energy, which is about 25 grams a day for someone eating 2,000 kcal. Average intake in the Nordic countries is roughly 16 to 26 grams, so many people fall short.

Fiber helps keep your digestion regular, feeds the good bacteria in your gut and makes a meal more filling. It also helps keep blood sugar steadier after you eat, and soluble fiber can lower LDL cholesterol. You can read more in our article on fiber.

A day with about 30 grams

This is what it can look like. The amounts are approximate and vary between products.

Five easy ways to add more

Go slowly

Fiber is good for you, but your stomach needs time to get used to it. Going from little to a lot overnight can cause gas and bloating. Add a little at a time over a few weeks, and drink plenty of water along the way.

If you have a bowel condition such as IBS, or if you use a medicine that affects your appetite or digestion, such as Ozempic, talk to your doctor or a dietitian about what suits you.

Food before powders

As the trend grows, so does the number of fiber bars, powders and enriched snacks. They can be useful now and then, but many of them are highly processed. Real food also gives you vitamins, minerals and several types of fiber at once, so it is a better place to start.

You do not have to count every gram. Ask yourself one simple question at each meal: where is the fiber?
